What is the Level 3 Mat Pilates qualification - and does it actually matter?
There are hundreds of Pilates courses available in the UK. Some cost £200 and take a weekend. Others are regulated national qualifications that take months to complete and are recognised by insurers, employers and professional bodies across the industry.
The difference matters - both for your credibility as an instructor and for the safety of the clients you teach.

What Ofqual regulation actually means
Ofqual is the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation - the government body that regulates qualifications in England. A qualification that is Ofqual regulated has been independently assessed and approved against national standards. It is not self-certified by the provider.
The Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Mat Pilates is an Ofqual regulated qualification. This means it is recognised by professional insurers, employers, studios, leisure centres, and professional bodies as a legitimate credential. It is the industry standard entry qualification for Pilates instructors in the UK.
An unregulated certificate - however professionally presented - carries none of these guarantees. Most professional insurers will not cover you to teach on the basis of an unregulated course alone. Most studios and gyms will not employ you on one. And clients are increasingly aware of the difference.

A proper foundation for a teaching career
The Level 3 Diploma covers everything you need to teach mat Pilates safely, professionally, and with confidence. Here is what the qualification includes.
The Pilates method
The history, philosophy and six core principles of Pilates. Understanding the foundation of the method before you begin to teach it.
Anatomy and physiology
Foundational anatomy and physiology relevant to movement and exercise instruction. Included in the Active IQ e-learning and assessed through two open book online exams.
The beginner and intermediate repertoire
The full mat Pilates exercise library at beginner and intermediate level - how to teach each exercise safely, how to cue effectively, and how to correct common errors.
Planning and delivering sessions
How to plan a well-structured class, manage a group, adapt exercises for different abilities, and deliver a safe and effective session from start to finish.
Client consultation and screening
How to conduct a proper client consultation, identify relevant health considerations, and ensure every client is exercising safely within appropriate guidelines.
Business foundations
At HSP, every pathway includes guidance on building a Pilates business - finding clients, pricing, marketing, and making the qualification work in the real world.
What the qualification allows you to do
Once you hold the Active IQ Level 3 Diploma, you have the nationally recognised credential to begin teaching professionally.
- Teach group mat Pilates classes commercially
- Offer one-to-one private mat Pilates sessions
- Obtain professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Apply for membership of CIMSPA - the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity
- Work for studios, leisure centres, gyms and fitness facilities
- Use the qualification as a gateway to further specialist training including pre and postnatal, reformer, and Level 4
The Level 3 Mat Pilates Diploma does not qualify you to teach pregnant or postnatal clients. Working with this population requires additional specialist training - such as the Active IQ Level 3 Award in Adapting Physical Activity for Antenatal and Postnatal Clients, which HSP will be offering from Summer 2026.

Not all Pilates courses are the same
The fitness industry is largely unregulated, which means anyone can create a Pilates course and sell certificates. Some of these courses are excellent CPD for already qualified instructors. Many are not sufficient as a standalone qualification to teach professionally.
The questions worth asking before enrolling on any Pilates training course: Is it Ofqual regulated? Is it accredited by a recognised awarding body? Will it be accepted by professional insurers? Is it recognised by CIMSPA? Is the content standardised and independently quality assured?
The Active IQ Level 3 Diploma answers yes to all of those questions. That is why it is the qualification we deliver at HSP - not because it is the easiest or the cheapest route, but because it is the right one.

The same qualification - delivered differently
Every provider who delivers the Active IQ Level 3 Diploma delivers the same regulated qualification. The certificate your students receive is identical. What differs is the experience of getting there.
At HSP, cohorts are capped at no more than 8 students. Every workshop is taught personally by Emma Lovelock - a Level 4 qualified instructor and Active IQ assessor with over 13 years of teaching experience. All in-person sessions take place at The Pilates Corner studio in Baldock - a real working Pilates studio, not a hired hall.
We also build business foundations into every pathway from day one, because the qualification is only useful if you can do something with it. Our Professional and Signature pathways include ongoing coaching support beyond the course itself.
